Hamm - Elephantastic...
In the seventies
Bjoern was born in
Germany, in Hamm, Westfalia.
After living in the Rhineland for Years
we decided
to go back to Bjoerns roots and finally
moved to the house with its im-
pressive garden.
Historie
For 150 Years, beginning in 1226 and founded
by Earl Adolf I of
Mark, Hamm was the principal town of the
Earldom of Mark.
It extended from M�nsterland to
Sauerland and from Central Ruhrarea (Bochum)
to Soest.
Mark had his own money and was independent from
catholic church.
In its final extension Mark consisted of the
Ruhrarea except of
Dortmund, parts of the Lower Rhineland, Sauerland
and Soest.
It was named the better known Earldom of Cleves
and Mark and
was never defeated. In the seventieth century
the last inheritor
died without having children and ended the Earldom
of Mark.
The emblem of Mark was the chessboard, 7 to
3, silver and red on
golden suface. It is visible on most town-emblems
in the former
Earldom of Mark. The city of Hamm of course
owns the chessboard
without accesoires.
In the seventies, when Germanys towns were recutted,
the town
leadership decided, that Mark becomes a part
of the new City of
Hamm.
150 Jahre lang, ab 1226, war Hamm
die Hauptstadt der Grafschaft
Mark. Sie reichte vom Münsterlnd bis einschließlich
Sauerland und
von Bochum bis Soest. Mark hatte seine eigene
Währung und war
unabhängig von der Katholischen Kirche.
In seiner größten
Ausdehnung umfasste die Grafschaft Kleve Mark
teile des
Niederrheins, das Ruhrgebiet ohne Dortmund,
das Sauerland und
Soest. Die nie besiegte Grafschaft endete, als
der letzte Erbe im
17. Jahrhundert ohne Nachkommen verstarb. Das
Wappen der
Grafen von Mark blieb bis Heute in den Grenzen
der Grafschaft
erhalten. Das 7 mal 3, Silber Rot auf Gold findet
sich einzeln
nur auf dem Wappen der Stadt Hamm, während
andere Städte
es mit Ergänzungen tragen

Von der Burg Mark ist lediglich
der Unterbau der Motte erhalten.
Dieser sogenannte Burghügel Mark ist heute
Naherholungsgebiet.
Ein Förderverein hat sich dem Erhalt dieser
Historie verschrieben.
Die ehemalige Ausdehnung lässt sich nur
erahnen. Zeitzeugen
sind die Kirche Mark und die Burg Altena,
die Herkunftsburg derer
von Mark. Sie ist im wesentlichen die einzige
erhaltene Burg in
der ursprünglichen Grafschaft, die nennenswert
erhalten ist.

Gegenwart
In the past 150 Years Hamms economy
referred to Coal-mining
business. As a part of the eastern Ruhrarea
Hamms economy
is contemporary changing to logistics and
services.
Today about 180.000 inhabitants live in this
partly rural partly urban
City.
Hamms main monument is the Elephant of Glass, 35 meters
high you can almost see it from far awy. Today in the
former CoalStore there are aexhibitions and visitors can reach
the top of the roof for a fantastic view over the City. To

Hamms Attraktion ist der Glaselefant im Maximilianpark.
Er ist mit über 20000 LEDs beleuchtet,
die bei Bedarf ihre Farbe
wechseln. So ordnet er sich in die Ruhrgebietslandmarken
ansehnlich ein. Im vorigen Kohlenbunker sind
nun Ausstellungen
